By Mike Holmes (77) Message from the barn by Mike Holmes 2/11/24 Give me some slack ! In the western horse-riding world we teach our horses to travel on a slack lead. If you've ever been to a horse show and watched the western horse classes, you noticed that the rider is not riding with a tight rein on their horses. This is to show the judges that your horse is well trained and at the very slightest touch of the rein or the calf of the leg or heal of the foot the horse understands what the trainer is asking it to do. Speed up, slow down, raise your head, lower your head, etc. It's truly amazing to watch a great horse and trainer at work as a team. Yet, to the person not understanding what is happening in the silent, unseen signals that are going on, it can be rather boring. You may even wonder at the end of their performance why all the clapping, whistling, etc. "What was so great about that" you may ask... Many husband-and-wife teams find themselves finishing each other's stories. It's a thing of beauty when partners are in sync with each other. That's how we should strive to be with our relationship with God. At the very slightest nudge from the holy spirit we should understand that we need to change something. Something is wrong, make a change! Speed up, slow down, pay attention. I remember traveling through Tulsa, OK one day during busy traffic when that still quite voice said "speed up, get past that gravel truck". Thank the Lord I didn't hesitate. I hit the gas and just as I got past the truck, I looked in the rear view mirror and that truck had turned over on it's side. I and others stopped and ran back to make sure everyone was alright. The small truck behind me was covered in gravel. Thank the Lord everyone was ok. Can you be trusted to be led on a loose rein or does the Lord have to keep a tight rein on you? To be part of a great team we must spend time with the trainer. If you've ever gone to a horse track and watched trainers work their horses, it's always in the early hours of the day, just before the sun comes up. There's something special about those early hours. No distraction, just you and the horse. You can hear the very breath of the horse and the horse can feel every movement from the trainer. Something magical happens in the early morning hours when it's just you and the Lord. Sit with the Bible in your lap, listen, listen close, . . He's wanting to communicate, He's wanting to give instruction that will be of great benefit as you and He travel life's journey. Listen & Learn. P.S. As I am writing this, I looked at the clock and it's 3:30 am. Thank you, Lord, for our quite time together! Thank you for instruction! |
Message From The Barn 2/05/24
By Mike Holmes (76) WAIT . . . "Be Still" Many of our friends have met our two Border Collies Zoey & Ruger. They travel with us every time we are on the road. We book events, load up the motor home and that becomes our home away from home until we return. These two BC's are great traveling companions. They also open a lot of ministry opportunities. Strangers ask about them and that opens the door to share the good new of Christ. Sorry for the rabbit trail (It was for someone). This morning I walked Zoey around the pond here at our son's place in Florida. As we walked, Zoey kept pulling on the leash to inch closer and closer to the pond. Remember . . . this is Florida & gators live in Florida! Not knowing whether or not there is a gator in that pond, I was keeping Zoey at a distance. She kept pulling every few feet. I kept pulling her back until she finally got far enough away from the potential danger. That familiar voice spoke quietly to my heart: "I have a new Message from the Barn for you to write". Ok, Lord I am ready! How many times have I pulled you away from danger? How many times have I spoke into your spirit to speed up or slow down or even stop! Sometimes you listened, sometimes you said "Why didn't I just listen to my gut feeling, AKA The Holy Spirit speaking. Yes, how many times have I pulled you away from trouble or danger? Do you have trouble being still and waiting for further instructions.? The Lord truly goes before us if we will trust Him. Some of us He has to get the megaphone to get our attention. We have been in a holding pattern for over two weeks now and Lord knows I hate being still, LOL Perhaps that's why we are here having to wait on HIM. This is one of those times when the Lord says "WAIT", Be Still and know that I am God. So we wait. Has God ever pulled you away from danger? Is He having me write this today, knowing that you are going to read it because He wants your attention? He wants you to get away from danger? Listen. Wait. Be still. I know in my spirit someone is being spoken to as you read this today. The old saying "don't take it personally". Do take it personal, It's for you. God has something better in mind. WAIT. Psalms 46:10 Be still and know that I am God . . . |

I'd have no idea where to start He spoke the world into existence, He breathed life into man He slung the stars into space and made the planets too Truth be know, If I were God . . . I wouldn't know what to do He laid earth's foundation and marked off it's dimensions It was He who stretched a measuring line across He set the footings and laid the corner stones If I were God . . . I'd be powerless and alone! If I were God, If I were God . . . But I 'am not! Thank God I 'am not! I simply choose to agree with him!!! |

Messages From The Barn 12/17/2023
By Mike Holmes (75) Liquid Gold aka Colostrum: As a retired horse trainer, breeder, publisher . . . all things horse! I sometimes look back at our days on the farm. Early this morning I was sleeping so good, must have been around 4am and suddenly I heard the word Colostrum. 0k, what about it, write a story. What? Write a message for the Barn story about Colostrum! It was hard to even go back to sleep, but I managed. Here it is several hours later and I can't shake it. So here ya go. "Colostrum" aka "Liquid Gold" I remember the days of our mares foaling early spring or late winter. We always knew when the babies were due. Good bookkeeping and regular ultra sounds from the vet help guide us as the days get closer and closer and you realize the foal could come at any time. There are signs that will normally pin point right down to the day and even hours that the mare is most likely to give birth. We would very quietly make our way to the barn, peek around the stall to watch the magnificent birth about to happen. I lost count of the numerous foals born on our farm. It was very important to get our hands on that new born while they were still wet. This practice is known as imprinting. It helps tremendously with training that foal for all future things. One morning while feeding the horses I noticed a mare in the pasture lying down as if she were colicing. To our knowledge she did not take during breeding and it was too late in the year to breed her back. I rushed over to check on her and discovered she had given birth. The foal lay still and we were concerned that she may not make it. We moved the mare and foal to a private pasture away from the other horses. The foal was weak but alive and jet black. A beauty! The vet did a thorough check and decided the mare was not producing Colostrum. It was brought in from a donor mare and that's really when our education about Colostrum began. The "Liquid Gold" (called this due to the color and the value it carries) because without it, the foals life is questionable. Colostrum delivers nutrients and is high in antibodies and antioxidants to build a newborns immune system. In other words "It is life sustaining"! Without it, life would be short and full of pain and sorrow. Somehow once again, I find it very difficult to believe in the big bang theory! I am reminded of the experience of becoming a new born Christian. That magic moment when we receive that spiritual Liquid Gold. It will guide us and keep us from harm if we will listen to that inward quite voice. Some call it a gut feeling, I prefer to recognize it as God's voice. It convicts us, it guides us, it will keep us safe IF we will take time to listen. |

By Mike Holmes (74) You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink! In my minds eye this morning as I walked toward the barn an image came to mind, a question, a very real concern. What if none of the horses want to eat or drink today? What if they decided to just stop altogether! Well, first thing I might do is fill a second water bucket with salt water to make them thirst. Once they get thirsty, they will drink and when they drink they will become hungry. It could become a very large task if all the horses decide to go on a hunger strike at the same time. I might try mixing molasses to their feed or offer an apple, all kinds of gift offerings to entice them to eat and drink. I might even become frustrated at their refusal to eat. “I’m offering a FREE gift, one that is life sustaining! Yet, you refuse!” They see the hay, they smell the grain, they hear the running water. They know it’s all good for them, yet they turn away! My heart is breaking. If they refuse my FREE gift of feed and water they will surly die in their stubbornness. Are you refusing God’s FREE gift of salvation? Have you been turning away while He continues to offer the Gift of eternal life? You might say well I am saved, I go to _____ church, I am a good person, I believe! Remember the horses “believe” that the water is cool, the feed taste great and the hay is fresh, but until they receive that which is offered . . . that FREE gift does them no good. Even Satan believes! That FREE gift of salvation has to be “received”. Once received it will become evident by the change in your life. People will notice something new, something different about you. You will want to share the good news with others. |

By Mike Holmes (73) In the presence of a good, good trainer... A beautiful sunrise this morning inspired the following message: A cup of coffee certainly helped, as I looked out across the race track here in Claremore, OK. where several trainers worked on introducing their students (young horses) to the scary things this life has to offer. That young horse has to be taught everything. Hoof trimming is scary until they learn to trust the trainer. Bathing is scary until they learn to trust the trainer. What is that beast you are putting on my back? Ohhh, a saddle? Pewee, why the heck did you put that chunk of metal in my mouth, and just when I was starting to trust you. Now you want to sit on my back... sorry bub, I’ve got a real problem with that! Ok, ok, guess all that wasn’t so bad. I really have come to enjoy our time together, BTW Thanks for helping me over come my fears. Oh, wait just a minute, what’s that thing you’re trying to put me in, looks like a prison cell with all those bars. I have seen other horses jump up and out like they’ve been shocked or something. They run clear out of sight. A starting gate? Hmmm, if that’s the starting I am wondering what the ending is gonna look like! So much for no fear!!! So much to teach these young colts. BTW you won’t ever get it right 100% of the time. But we must try! As parents we have a responsibility. The Bible (Proverbs 22:6) teaches us to train up a child in the way he should go. Imagine for a minute a young horse who has no one to give them guidance. They would have to learn everything the hard way. Perhaps stuck in a fence at a very early age and left there to die. Perhaps they get many cuts and injuries but somehow survive until one day when they are 10 years old a kind human rescues them and says I will provide for you. Feed, shelter, water, bath, doctor you and protect you all the days of your life. Now lets start with trimming those hooves! Now a good trainer knows you must first win their trust. Once that trust has been won, your new equine friend will follow you anywhere. They are happiest in your presence. hmmm. . . They look forward to the sunrise... They know they will soon be in your presence and feasting at the table of good food. Come unto me, all you with heavy burdens and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 |

By Mike Holmes (72) The worth of an old Rusty Roof! During our semi-annual ministry road trip, I kept noticing old barns with rusty roofs. After several attempts at getting my attention I finally caught on, ”OK, Lord I’m listening”. What is the worth of an old rusty roof? When it was first put on, it was bright silver and would hurt your eyes if you looked at it for very long while the sun was shining on it. But as it ages?! What is the worth of an old rusty roof? Once nailed to the trusses it helps strengthen the over-all structure. It helps hold everything together (hmmm). It has been through an untold number of storms, lightening strikes, freezes, tornado’s, extreme heat. That old rusty roof has fought many battles against all kinds of weather elements; just to protect and shelter the prized possessions inside! I know sometimes as seniors (old rusty roofs), we can come to a place where we wonder about our own worth? There are as many numerous jobs in Gods kingdom as there are sheets of metal to build all the barns every created. Each one is as important to God (Harvesting and sheltering). Some barns are small and some large. They are still in the same business! What is the worth of an old rusty roof? (seniors). We are responsible to shield those priceless possessions in our circle. What circle is that? Every person who has been put in your life was put there for a reason. Sometimes we pray for them, sometimes with them. People (all ages) are in need of learning from watching Godly examples. Not pretender’s, the real day to day spiritual seniors! Let us “the rusted roofs” speak a kind word into someone’s life. Lead them by example in or out of the church. Be their light! What is the worth of an old rusty roof?. Shelter and protect those priceless possessions! Be strong (in Christ Jesus) when the winds blow and the storms come, Let the new metal see us praying and standing against the evils of this world. What is the worth of an old rusty roof? By Mike Holmes (71) It’s supper time at the barn. All the horses are in and ready to eat, except the pony “Trigger”! After a few minutes of calling out for Trigger to come home, we realize something is wrong. You see, Trigger might be smaller than all the rest of the horses but he is always trying something new as if he had something to prove to the world. A new challenge, a new adventure, etc. Sometimes he’d get himself in trouble. With the other horses secured in the barn off we go to find Trigger. Calling over and over again, checking every possible place he could be and finally, there he is stuck in an old muck pond. It’s the lowest part of the farm with all the water draining to that area. Even when the rest of the farm is dry, that old muck pond remains soft. That is why we put a fence around it and sign’s that read “STAY OUT”. Guess old Trigger can’t read. Something caught his attention and the challenge was on. Yup, he found the only weak spot in the fence and there he went. Now he’s stuck in the muck, grrr ! Get the tractor and the ropes, we’ve got to get him out of there lest he parish in the muck. I'm fussing to myself. Once we get him out, I ought break his leg to keep him close to me and out of trouble! Well, that’s what the Shepard's would do if they had a sheep that continued to run off. Ok, we would never hurt a horse, although sometimes we might feel like it at the moment! Not really!!! We love Trigger, just not so much at the moment. LOL Luke 15: 3-7 Tells about a Shepard who lost one sheep. The Shepard left all the others and went in search for that one. When he was found they all rejoiced. Yes, we all rejoiced when Trigger was found and rescued. We brought him back to the barn, bathed him and examined him for injuries, pulled muscles, etc. He’s home, he’s safe, he is being fed, he is loved. Have you ever been in a spot where you knew you were stuck? Seemed like the darkness was setting in, the sun was going down and all hope was lost. The enemy whispers, “your all alone, no one knows or cares where you are”. You begin to think you will die right there in the muck pond. No, don’t you give up! You keep fighting like old Trigger did. The Master is calling for you. Call out to him. Help is on the way! |

By Mike Holmes (70) Let us call the neighbors to help celebrate his homecoming! 3 days ago, our neighbor's beautiful dog "Mudbud" disappeared. The night darkened and all hope seemed lost. Many posts were made and shared on Facebook and other social media. The search was on! Most importantly prayers reached Heaven! This incident happened at a time of year where 3 days seems so significant and a story that is near and dear to the hearts of believers. We call it Christmas. It's the celebration of the birth of our savor Jesus. He also had a 3-day experience. He returned from the grave to offer eternal life, Salvation. Mudbud was lost and God only knows where he was and what he went through. All that matters is he made his way back home. Mudbud returned home where he is loved, cared for, fed and the neighbors rejoiced because he was lost but now, he is found. Luke 15:9-10 |

By Mike Holmes (69) Blow wind blow! My leaf blower stopped on me and after several attempts at fixing it, it's now in the shop for repair. So . . . it's back to the regular old house broom. Been a long time since I swept the deck with a broom! As I began to sweep, there was that familiar voice, that nudge, a shoulder tap, some will call it a whisper! The Holy spirit speaks to each of us if we will only "be still" and listen. See how long it is taking to sweep this deck? See how much better job the blower does? The blower gets in all the cracks between the boards and gets all the acorns, shells, leaves and dirt. The broom only gets the loose stuff, the big stuff. But all that stuff left behind is ugly, takes away from all the rest of the beauty. When we surrender our lives to our heaven father, He takes a blower to us. But over time we need to have that blower used again and again. Sometimes we tend to walk by the broom closet and get most of the trash swept, but we aren't in the mood to walk a little closer to where we know the blower gets used. It's kind of like driving the truck that you just took mudding through a car wash and told the operators not to worry about the wheels and tires. Come on!!! Get it cleaned up all the way. There is no need to hold on to any dirt, mud, etc. Let it go! Who needs mud? I mean really !!! |

By Mike Holmes (68) The Florida Grandfather Oak is one of the few magical beings that are native of the World. He is regarded as the Patriarch of all the trees. Withstanding many years of storms, raging hot summer sun and flying debris from hundreds of hurricanes over the course of its life. Strength of a strong man looking into the face of evil as if to say “take your best shot”!!! The Florida Grandfather Oak. Its majestic size and strength. Its long reaching branches offer a large canopy of shade for all to enjoy. Its shade protects the grass from the sun and heat. Oak trees develop very deep rooting systems that branch off of its main taproot. Over time, the taproots prominence recedes and is replaced by numerous large lateral roots that form the lateral root system. These lateral roots penetrate the soil 4 feet deep and extend laterally to 90 feet. It’s easy to see the strength and stay fastness of these trees. As I looked upon this tree today I was reminded of some of our past government leaders, church leaders, law and order, men and women who stood their grown for right and wrong. What’s happened to them? Many (not all) have received a shot, much like I can only imagine one might give a Grandfather oak to destroy it. With flesh and blood, sadly that shot is money, power, notoriety, fame and fortune. Things that will not outlive the grandfather oak. Certainly things that will not follow them to their eternal home. We can learn so much from natures wonders. Look around... all of Gods creations point toward God, their creator. They all have a story to tell if we will take time to listen. Are you a picture of a grand oak, strong and rooted in Gods word and truths. Are you able to stand in the face of life when the going gets tough? Or are you like a weed growing in the sand, easy to sway with the winds of life? If you are like that weed in sandy soil, you can change your own destination by asking Jesus to become the Lord of your life. Allowing the voice of the holy spirit to guide you in all that you do. Watch yourself mature and become a Grandfather Oak. Not shaken by the storms of life, agreeing with Gods word when life gets hard. We don’t have to bend with the slightest storms. With God at the helm we can take comfort in knowing that we don’t need to have all the answers. We simply trust Gods word. He does have the answers and the greater plan. Colossians 2: 6-7 (NIV) says this: So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. |
Messages from The Barn: 11/27/2021
By Mike Holmes (67) Out of the hills of western Kentucky this old barn screamed out, “Hey, come here, take my picture, I’ve a message for you”. I have learned (Well truthfully I am still learning) not to ask questions when I hear that still quit voice. For a couple weeks I have wondered, “what is the message”. I noticed the grass is still green even though it is Fall. The tree leaves are turning color preparing to die and fall to the ground. Seeds have already fallen that will produce new life come Spring. Everything we see in this picture will die and live again. Except that old barn that called out to me! Oh sure some of the old lumber may be reclaimed for unique furniture pieces or picture frames and they too will eventually fall prey to time, rot and decay. Yet the grass, the trees and leaves will continue living on through their offspring. So what’s the difference? What’s the message? Colossians 2:6-7 NIV - So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. You see the trees were before and after, the grass was before and after, the leaves before and after. Because they ALL are “rooted”. That old barn has no roots. Oh if it could talk there would be many interesting stories, but they too are soon forgotten. But everything that is rooted will come back to life!!! We have a responsibility to teach our youth, our children about Gods love so they too will be rooted so that one day they too will live again with God our father. No root . . . no life! How’s your eternal life looking? |

By Mike Holmes (66) I wonder what was this deer thinking when I drove slowly by. Picture # 1 shows the deer looking to see if there was truly any danger. I stopped the car on the other side of the warehouse and quietly walked close to the deer. Pictures # 2 & # 3 show how distracted and unaware this young deer was. Unaware of any dangers! Away from the group and out in the open, an easy target! All alone, in a pasture where momma has always said not to go! There is danger in the open areas when you are alone. Stay in the forest where it’s not easy for the enemy to see you and by all means travel in groups. If you are shot at, they may get one, but the rest will be able to escape. I was able to slowly walk up within 30 feet of this little doe. If I had bad intentions she could have lost her life at an early age. If I had time to take these 4 pictures, I certainly had time to shoot her. Right now the devil and his demons are waging war against you. Job 1:7 reminds us that our enemy does not rest. “The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the LORD, “From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.”” The battle is constant, that’s why Peter reminds us to “be sober-minded and watchful.” Satan not only waits to devour us but also tries to out-smart us. (2 Corinthians 2:11 He constantly is scheming and plotting on how to deceive us.) The enemy only needs one opportunity to snag you. So remember there is safety in numbers (That's why they call us a church/Family). Being involved in a church doesn’t guarantee that you won’t be snagged, but it such does make the devil’s job a lot harder. Don’t be caught in the open, unprepared and alone. Stay aware & alert! |
Messages From The Barn: 8/17/21
By Mike Holmes (65) Sensitivity Training: Many people enjoy watching horses and riders perform different events. Some prefer Western style and some English as shown in the picture. Most everyone enjoys watching horses perform. But a large percentage of people do not realize the effort that goes into training. From day one we begin training and it continues throughout the life of the horse until they reach the age of retirement. Through a series of taps on the shoulder or a gentle nudge from a trainers spur, a squeeze of the legs or even a shift in the saddle sends a signal to the horse. The goal is to be able to ask the horse with such a light touch (a whisper), that even the judges in the horse show cannot see the “ask”. True story: Several years ago, I had taught one of our horses to add, subtract, multiply, etc. just for fun. I knew what buttons to push to get the horse to strike with her front hoof. I continued working with her on stopping the strikes on que until we came to the point that I could walk 6 ft away from her and discretely point with my finger at her hoof. She would start the count off, when I dropped my finger she would quit striking the ground, giving the illusion of a math expert, LOL . People standing by watching thought I was just standing there with my thumbs in my pockets, but the horse had learn to watch where I was pointing. Lord point me in the right direction and teach me to understand you ques. Romans 8:5,6. (5) For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Lord help us become sensitive to your touch, to your ques, to hear that still quiet voice and respond with the accuracy of a well schooled horse. Let all of our senses respond to you and for your good will. AMEN. |

Messages From The Barn: 8/15/21 By Mike Holmes (64) THRUSH CAN CRIPPLE A GOOD HORSE: Horses can become lame from thrush, If left untreated. The organisms can invade the sensitive tissues of the foot, leading to serious problems. Thrush is a condition thought to be caused by a bacteria or fungus that is found naturally in the soil and thrives on damp, moist areas in the foot of the horse, such as the frog, clefts and sole, (Purple areas in the picture) which can pack with mud, manure and debris. Horses can become lame if left untreated and the organisms can invade the sensitive tissues of the foot, leading to more serious problems. If the condition worsens, consult your veterinarian. Environmental management and proper foot care are crucial in the prevention of thrush. This article helps explain to non-horse owners what Thrush is and the dangers if not treated. Do Christians get Thrush? We have all seen people who once ran hard and fast to spread the good news of Jesus, but at some point they slowed down to a crippling walk and sadly some times a crawl or they sit down on their bucket of do nothing. Fresh bedding and daily stall cleaning became a weekly chore instead of daily maintenance. Sin slowly crept into their sole (soul) and started that slow but steady deterioration. Good news! There is a simple treatment. It’s normally not an overnight cure, but it is normally a fast recovery. A daily dose of God’s word, quiet time, listening for that soft quiet voice to speak to your soul. Time alone with HIM is the greatest cure of all. One last thing. Never underestimate the power in songs of inspiration. Lyrics will speak to the soul when nothing else can. After a short period of treatment you will be back on track. Philippines 4:8 . . . Think on these things! |
Messages From The Barn: 6/21/21
By Mike Holmes (63) There once was a little pot belly pig named “Elmer” who talked and complained nonstop. Always fussing about the quality of food, or the quantity. The bedding was never good enough and the neighboring animals stayed up too late or got up too early. The boss dog demanded way too much. So, one day he decided he would be better off on his own. So off he ran, through the forest fending for himself. FREEDOM... After a few weeks his energy level was down, he was losing weight, not sleeping well and always looking over his shoulder in fear. The weeks turn to months and his shinny coat had turned dark and dull. Life away from the barn wasn’t all he thought it would be. One day a conversation with some run-away animals went something like this: Those animals up there at the Owens farm sure have life easy. What? Did he hear that right? He moved a little closer to the conversation. Yes, they were talking about the very farm Elmer had run away from. He thought if they only knew. The bedding was... well, it was really great. The food they said was delicious and full of victims and minerals we cannot afford. They talked about knowing the farmer Mr. Owens. What a great master he was and how he loved his barn pals and supplied their every need. Kept them clean, warm and safe and they never go hungry ! As they continued talking Elmer thought to himself “You don’t “KNOW” Mr. Owens . . . you only know “of” him. You have never had him pick you up in his arms and hug you. You haven’t had him doctor you and bring healing salve for you. You have never had him put you in a tub and wash all the mud and dirt away. You don’t ‘KNOW” him at all. The conversation continued about the things they heard about Mr. Owens. Things that Elmer knew they did not really know, but he did! Yes, he was once a residence of the Owens Farm. He knew Mr. Owens personally. He lived in his presence, was fed the best and slept in the comfort and safety of the Owens Farm. It was then that Elmer made a decision to turn around and make his way back home. We already know what happens when he shows up back at the Owens Farm. How he is accepted by Mr. Owens and the gratefulness of his return. Now the question is, do you “KNOW” HIM as your Lord and savior or do you just know “of” him. You see there is a difference; You can ‘KNOW” Him. The 3rd chapter of John tells us about Nicodemus who Jesus had a conversation with. Don’t settle for just knowing who Jesus is. You must KNOW him and have personal relationship. Take that first step home, it’s really not as far as you think. |
MESSAGE FROM THE BARN: 6/10/21
By Mike Holmes (62) There's a ruckus going on in the barn! We always slept with the windows cracked just enough to be able to hear the noises of the barn. Yes, listen close and the barn people (horses) will talk to you. Sometimes a horse would get out of their stall and the other horses would start talking. They would scream out "He's out of his stall again". LOL. If a cougar came through or a snake got in a stall, the horses began to talk. The more frightened they got, the louder they got. Once I remember two of our stallions got into an argument. Of course they were separated in different parts of the barn for their safety. One of them must have insulted the others mamma and the fight was on. Somehow, they both got out of their stalls. When we got to the barn, we found one of our halter horses (1200 lbs) had jumped a board fence. Horse people will appreciate that statement, LOL. The other stallion headed out to a large pasture and ran through 5 strands of barbed wire. Fortunately, we had it strung guitar string tight and every wire popped as he ran through full speed ahead. You see neither one really wanted to fight, they were just bored and began running their mouths which grew into something much larger than either stallion had bargained for. Parents listen to their children play and often can divert an argument or fight before it gets to that point. The children have no clue that anyone is listening, but we pay attention!!! Do you ever hear noises coming from the barn? Ok maybe you don't have horses or a barn . . . But your inner voice (the holy spirit) speaks to you about a problem in "your barn". Sometimes we just need to be aware of a potential problem and sometimes it's time to chase down the horses, round them up and get them to the wash rack to inspect the damage. You may need to run cold water to help cool them down to prevent a heart attack. You may need to call a vet and get some stitches. You may need to brush them, talk calmly to them. Show some love, mercy and kindness. When it's all said and done the broken stalls will have to be fixed and the wounded will have to be attended to, perhaps days or weeks, but that's where mercy comes into play. You see we won't give those horses what they deserve . . . we will love them back to good health. As we are fixing stalls, doctoring horses, fussing and complaining . . . listen close you may hear these words; How does it feel? You too sometimes get yourself into a mess, running your mouth not really thinking about where it could lead you. Next thing you know the stalls are busted all to pieces and the fight is on and both of you get hurt! Listen close for noises coming from the barn. Stop it before it gets out of hand. James 3:6 says: The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. |
Message From The Barn: 5/16/21
By Mike Holmes (61) Ever had the opportunity to watch horses interact in the pasture? Perhaps a group of dogs playing at a dog park. So much to learn simply by observing them. Both horses and dogs have a pecking order, an alpha. Which one will be the boss, 2nd in command, 3rd etc. Some are short, tall, heavy, thin, attractive and not so much. Some are very athletic some seem to trip over their own feet. They all need to eat and drink. They all need rest and they all deserve peace. They all require friendship. Not a single one wants to be alone. From the very first sight of each other they are asking the question "can I trust you?" Do you want to be my friend? Will you steal my food? Will you try to hurt me? I don't think it ever crosses their minds to think "I don't like your color", Your shape, your weight, height or look at that flashy collar with all the sparkles. It's ok to be different and you can still fit in. These animals are all different yet they get along. I have noticed some of the smallest horses and dogs are in the leadership role. Why is that? It's a frame of mind. Get your mind right and you can get along with everyone regardless of size, color, rich or poor. Doesn't matter the house they live in, the car or truck they drive, the clothes they wear or where they work. Many judge by the amount of wealth and toys. Do you think for one moment the dog riding in your car looks at other dogs and says "We drive a ____ car/truck? Sounds ridiculous don't it. I have also taken time to people watch. If you haven't done that, I encourage you to go to a mall, a park, etc., to simply watch humans. You may find yourself a little embarrassed at how we interact. You may even be over heard saying "Lord help us"!!! God is not impressed with those things. After all he made streets paved with gold. LOL think about that. Where does God place the value of gold; Under His feet. He walks on it as if it were cinders! Want to impress God? Give Him your heart, he'll shine it up and hand it back to you for safe keeping and you too will see life differently. |
Message From The Barn:
by Mike Holmes (60) Remember that old water dipper? Yes, I do! I drank many times from that ole dipper but first we'd have to take the water bucket down that familiar path in the woods. Grandma would lead the way to a small stream of water. She would pick up a rock that she had carefully placed there many years ago. She would begin dipping from that cold spring crystal clear water. Best water I have ever tasted. Once that large bucket was full, we'd make our way back up the hill and through the wooded path that led back to grandma's two room house. Yes, you read that right. Kitchen with table and chairs and a bed room with two or three large pillow beds. I never saw grandma in bed. She was always the last one to bed and the first one up. Hmmm, come to think of it, I wonder if she ever did go to bed? Perhaps not during the two weeks I would spend with them each summer. No electricity, no running water, no indoor bathrooms or showers. A large fireplace would heat the entire house. Times were hard, but I never knew they were. 5 to 10 years old and everything was fun. Looking up at the stars through nail holes, and watching chickens play under the house through the cracks in the floor. I never knew grandma was poor. She loved the Lord and always looked forward to a rare trip to church and grandpa "Jake" always had a Bible in his lap. Some mighty great memories from those days at grandmas. She lived a long healthy life with never going to see a doctor. I don't ever remember her complaining. Everyone shared that dipper and drank from that same cool clear water from that old water bucket. We gave thanks to the Lord and asked Him to bless the food to the nourishment of our bodies. Bottled water, LOL . . . Give me that cool fresh water from that old dipper that has been blessed since its arrival so many years ago. Maybe it's time we got back to the basics of life and included God & Prayer in all we do. Maybe it's time to tell fear to take a hike. Get a little more Faith and a lot less fear. Now somebody hand me that old dipper please! P.S. Grand Ole Opry could be heard on Friday nights with that old battery operated radio as we sat around the table with a oil lamp. By Mike Holmes (59) It was as though I could hear the barn speaking! When I walked into that old barn that was established so many years ago, with the foundation that was formed of concrete that must have been 3 ft deep and 3 ft wide to hold all that weight. Once that old barn was weather tight, but now after all these years and lack of proper upkeep the wind was whistling through the cracks. Someday's the wind seemed to whistle a beautiful song; But not today! Today as I entered, I heard a different song. A sad song! There's something different today, something not quite right! As I looked around I saw one board that was warped and had pulled loose allowing the wind and rain to rush in, making such a loud noise. I ask that board what are you doing? What was the purpose of this, pulling back and away from the rest? Well, I never really expected that board to speak back, LOL. Oh but it did, yes indeed it shouted back at me. You know I have been faithful for 60 plus years. Content to just hang up here shielding you from all the weather elements. Never have you heard a word from me although I complained often to myself. Unappreciated, unnoticed, disrespected. You never even realized I had nails coming loose. So I just thought I'll fix you! I'll just pull back hard and pop a couple of these nails letting in the wind and rain. After all, I'm more important than any other board in this barn, I'm on the side that gets all the bad storms and I am the one who protects the main support beam. I need to be recognized. I need to be appreciated. I should be the one board that everyone talks about. How beautiful I am. Look at all the unique character about me. You should hang a spot light on the wall and put the focus on me! What would you do without ME? Well, the first thought that came to mind was rip that board down from there, throw it in the burn pile and show it how unimportant it really is. You can be replaced. Just as I reached for the hammer and ladder, I heard a knock on my door. My hearts door that is. Wait just a minute. Remember how faithful that board has been all these years!!! Don't you get a little full of yourself sometimes too? Nobody likes a loud mouth board pulling back, resisting the rest just to get noticed. It's not a pretty song. Kind of like an old piano that's out of tune. Don't throw it away just because it's out of tune. Take a little time to tune it up and it will play a beautiful song again. Work with that old board. Oh yeah, sometimes new boards scream a little too. They are all worth a little attention. Even when they get out of tune! |

MESSAGES FROM THE BARN: 9/7/20
By Mike Holmes (58) Well our 2020 trip here at Pepper Gate Farm is coming to an end in a few days. While giving thanks to the Lord this morning for providing this opportunity to minister here and earn money to help fund our travels for this 2020 Fall Ministry Road Trip, I paused and asked... Lord I have been in this barn many times, this is the very spot where Messages From The barn was born. Today I asked Lord, am I missing something? Then these words hit me like a ton of bricks. WALLS & GATES. Wow... of course, no barn is complete without walls and gates! Cities throughout the Bible had great walls and gates. Heaven has gates. Hell has a gate too. Our homes have walls and gates (doors). WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT? We bring the horses in each evening to keep them safe from attacks of wild predators. They are furnished fresh cool water, quality hay and feed that has all the required proteins and supplements. They will sleep in comfort on choice bedding and yes there will be a salt block for them to lick too. Stall walls are too high for them to get out or most predators to get in. Gates are strong with locks for their safety. We also have walls and gates surrounding the feed and hay room. If a horse were able to get into them they could easily founder and possibly die. Revelation 1:18 verifies that Hell has a gate, because Jesus defeated both death and hell, taking with him the KEYS. Luke 16:23 The rich man while in Hell could see Abraham and Lazarus but could not reach out to them because he was locked behind the walls and gates of Hell. Revelation 21:21 Talks about 12 gates, each being made from a single pearl and there is a description of the magnificent wall and foundation. I don’t want to miss that beautiful sight !!! Walls and gates are also an essential part of our hearts. Both physical and spiritual. Think about your heart. if it weren’t for walls what would hold the muscle together? It would be unable to stabilize and function as it should. Also there are gates and without them the blood could not get in and out of the heart and the heart would die. We also have a spiritual heart with walls and gates that can let in good or evil. Evil only needs a small crack in the gate and it will force its way through. Jesus on the other hand is a gentleman. Standing at the door knocking and waiting to be welcomed in. All we have to do is truly believe and when we do, we will gladly open the gate for Him to come in. Oh yeah, don’t worry about the mess and clutter, He is great about cleaning all that stuff right out of the way! INVITE HIM IN TODAY. Don’t miss Heaven! |
MESSAGES FROM THE BARN: 9/7/20
By Mike Holmes (57) Something as simple as a plastic pitch fork can speak volumes if we will tune in to listen. Did you know the horse has their own language? Yes they do, today it is recognized as the language of Equus. Now for the plastic pitch fork... LOL no it doesn’t talk, But God sure spoke through it today. While cleaning horse stalls He pointed out how the pitch fork represents the church (not a building), people make up the church. The buildings are just places where we come together to worship as fellow Christians. None are perfect, each of us have our own unique characteristics and flaws. One of the forks I was using came up missing one of it’s teeth. The chore of picking stalls became much harder with a missing tooth. The closer I looked the more I realized the picture the Lord was bringing into focus. There is one handle, one screw holding the plastic head to the handle and 18 teeth. There are also 2 heavy supports cross the pitchfork (backbone). The handle was still in great shape, the screw was still doing it’s job and the two supports were still doing their job. In fact the remaining 17 teeth were still doing their job. All had a job to do and each one working together, pulling their weight allowed the pitchfork to do it’s job to the fullest potential. Less then 5% was missing in action! Just one tooth. One member. But the difference was amazing. The effectiveness of that fork was damaged beyond belief. If that tooth could speak it may have said something like this; I'm not really doing anything, I won’t even be missed. But the remaining members have to pick up the slack. This is really a picture of the church world today. Many have taken the attitude that I’m not really needed, I won’t even be missed. Churches are closing all over our country and moral decay is gaining ground. What happens to our bodies if not given the proper nourishment? We decay! We die! Let me throw out a life saver to you, Get your family back to church. You need it. Your family needs it. Our country needs it. God needs you too! |
MESSAGES FROM THE BARN: 8/29/20
By Mike Holmes (56) Looking around the Stalls today a thought come to mind. This Barn is made of wood and metal. There are 4 X 4's, 4 X 6's, 2 X 4's and 2 X 8's. There is also plywood and metal roofing which requires screws and nails. There's PVC piping for water and electrical conduit to run electric wiring through and then there's the wiring and outlet's, ceiling fans, etc. The list of materials could go on and on. The point is, it takes many different items and material to make up the BARN. Kind of like you and me, all together we make up the church. None of us are perfect and we can't all be a 6 X 6 or metal roofing. We all are unique and have individual purposes. But bring us all together, each of us serving the purpose that God has given us, we become strong, we become the church. Can you imagine building a barn and a couple of 4 X 6 members decide they want to be an electrical outlet and just refused to be what God had called them to be? That barn would suffer, integrity and strength would be weakened. It could even be an unsafe place to occupy. The same applies to families as well. Father's need to be fathers and mom's need to be moms while children need to be children. Children need to be guided and directed by loving parents. Taught to be respectful and love one another. Someone said the decay of our country started when we took God out of our schools but I believe it started when we took Him out of our homes. Let's invite Him back into our homes...starting with a sincere prayer of repentance for ignoring Him. Get involved in a local ministry and be the example that God would have you to be. If He calls you to be a 6 X 6, step up! You are needed ! |
MESSAGES FROM THE BARN: 8/27/20
By Mike Holmes (55) Healthy horse poo! Yup, any good horseman will tell you straight up, check their poop. You can tell at a glance how your horse is feeling. A little poking around may determine that your horse has worms; While it’s not the only tell-tell sign of your horses condition, it can sure be a good indicator. Pictured here is a healthy horse manure. This horse was most likely on a well balanced diet. How is your spiritual diet? How’s the intake? It effects what come out! What do we leave behind? I am afraid as representatives of the most high God we sometimes leave behind unhealthy droppings. It can be as simple as a bad attitude, something we said to a stranger or worse to a loved one. Sometimes it behooves us to zip it up, I know, even the thought is not right, but it becomes double trouble when we think it and then act on it. Now we need to repent twice. Stop and think before you let it come out of your mouth. Bite your tongue, weigh the consequence before they become actions. It’s never pleasant returning to the seen of the crime to pick up your own poo! |

By Mike Holmes (54) While working at West Dawson yesterday ( WestDawson.Net ) I picked up this piece of wood and was blown away by the cross! I know this is no coincidence; Lord what is the message here? This morning I looked up Walnut trees and was reminded of the huge tree at the end of the block where I grew up. All the neighbor kids would meet there and climb all over that tree. Someone even hung a big rope for us to play on. Such great memories of that big old Walnut tree. My first circle of friends. I can still see their faces. As I looked closer at this piece of wood, surrounding the cross is a circle with a reddish coloring. This reminded me of the blood of Jesus as He was crucified so we could be saved from hell. (John 3:16) I noticed there were other circles too. As we travel speaking and singing, I often speak about "Our circle of friends". We all have a circle of friends, relatives and neighbors. As Christians we are to be the light in a dark place. Looking at the piece of wood again I see a dark design shaped kind of like a tornado. My thoughts are this, the circle with the cross represents me (A Christian) the circles around that circle is my circle of friends. I noticed that a small section of the second circle has a small amount of red overflowing into it. My life is touching some of my friends. However, after closer examination there is much work to be done! I must try to reach those in my circles for Christ. I believe the dark tornado design represent the evil force that is ever present and getting stronger and closer to my friends. Lord help me to be light in dark places. Guide us to lead the hurting and lost into a relationship with Christ Jesus. How about your circle of friends? You may be there only light, their only connection to Christ. By Mike Holmes (53) Our fearless Border Collie "Ruger". Faster than a speeding bullet, can leap over tall buildings and spin circles faster than the wheels on a truck can turn. Those who own a Border Collie understand what I am saying, LOL But at the least sound of thunder Mr. fearless wants in my lap, under my arms or behind my back. He wants to be as close to me as possible. When things are normal they will jump fences, run across the backs of sheep to get to where they are supposed to be. They will lick you to death at play and take a bullet for you to defend you in a time of trouble. They have a keen sense to know what to do often before their owners do. Rated at the top of the chart for most intelligent dogs. Ruger fits all these categories until the thunder comes! How often do we get busy doing "Life" and forget where our Master is ? Have we wondered so far away that we cannot hear his voice? His call? Do we frantically search for Him when we are fearful? When the storms come? Do we scream out Lord where are you when I need you? If we remain close to Him we need only to whisper His name when the storms of life come threatening us. He never promised smooth sailing throughout life's journey, He did promise He would never leave us. That He would always be there for us. If you have wandered away brush off the dust from your Bible, kneel at your bed side, find your prayer closet and get alone with the Lord. He is listening for your voice. |

By Mike Holmes (52) WARPED and Bent - out of shape! Today I was busy building another store front at West Dawson (A new music venue in Dawson Springs, KY) http://www.WestDawson.Net I noticed one of the boards I had put up a few days ago had warped. I put a screw in it to draw it in, but because it was so badly warped it pulled right back out. Plan B, loosen that screw and put another screw alongside that one. Careful not to tighten too tight. WHY? If I had tightened too tight the board could have absolutely broke. A carpenter understands the value of limited pressure. Less is more! As the days go by, I will tighten those screws a little at a time until the desired shaped is obtained. Yup, that's when that still, quite voice was heard. See that is what many overzealous Christians do...they meet a new Christian and they try to impose their beliefs and/or convictions. Expecting them do this and stop that, study this and don't go there, etc. Before you know it that person has little desire to be around you and possibly other Christians. They, like us need to study and pray. But why don't we help guide them by allowing them to see Christ in us. Let God grow them up at His rate of speed. Let them ask questions but give them biblical answers not opinions. As long as we can keep them close to us and set the example and be available. Never tightening too much. Soon that wrapped board will take the desired shape and function as it's intended. Incidentally, the board was on the front of the Chapel I am building. Thank you, Lord for the first of many sermons to come out of that Chapel (Store front). |
"The Bridle Path"

MESSAGES FROM THE BARN:
By Mike Holmes (51) Horses are creatures of habit . . . walking the same path over and over . . . the path that is comfortable . . . The bridle path! Humans too are creatures of habit. Imagine for a moment a horse traveling to and from the barn, his place of shelter. The place he comes to refuel. He knows when he gets there he will have fresh water to quench his thirst, food to fill his hunger and fresh bedding to give him rest. The barn will shelter him from the storms, the wind and rain! Imagine a break in the fence and a curious minded horse slips through to explore the rest of the world. Away from the shelter and safety of home. Troublesome waters he has just entered, hopefully before he gets too far gone he decides to turn around and make his way back to the safety of his barn and pasture. It warms my heart to imagine that lost horse turning around and making their way back home. If that horse only traveled a few hundred feet from the "Bridle path" it would only take a short time to get back to safety. The longer he travels away from the "Bridle path" the greater the chance he may never find his way home. He is walking among other animals that don't know him and don't really care what happens to him; But home is where he is truly loved and cared for. We are going through some tough times with this corona virus. We have been held back from the barn (Church), out here in the pastures with only trees to shelter us: yes we are receiving water and feed but the sleeping quarters aren't the same, little comfort and safety. We can't wait to get back to the barn (Church) where our family can all come in out of the storm. A place where we can relax in comfort and safety together with family who really care for each other. Recently I heard a friend say "I may never go back to Church" I am comfortable here. My heart sank. You see that's what can happens when we see a break in the fence and curiosity say's come here check this out. Before long we may find ourselves so far away that we have no idea where that break in the fence was. How will we ever get back to the comfort and safety. How will we find our way home. Have you walked through that break in the fence? Ask how do I get back to the "Bridle path"? Let me tell you about a short cut. Oh, those scars you have acquired along the way will still be there, but once you get back to the barn the Master will clean you up and put healing salve on. He will stitch up those open cuts. He will comfort you and feed you. He will give you rest because no one loves you like Jesus! You can't be part of The Bride if your not on the "Bridle Path". Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. |

MESSAGES FROM THE BARN:
By Mike Holmes (50) Black snakes are pretty common to barns. They help keep the rat's away. Today I walked upon what I thought was a black snake. As I approached, it stopped, raised it's head and flattened the head and neck, as if to say "I am dangerous" you should fear me! No fear, but curiosity caused me to look up the kind of snake and found it to be a black Eastern Hog-nosed snake. They are known for their theatrical defensive behavior. Alarmed snakes inflate the body with air, flatten the head and neck like a cobra, and expel the air in a long hiss. So I let the snake move away from me without harming it. As I continued with my chores I thought a lot about it and once again, inspiration gives another message from the barn. 1 John 4:4 says; Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. Just like that ole snake (who had no real power over a human). He tried to cause FEAR. Fear by deceit! It lied to me, he told me it was dangerous. Just like the devil will talk to you and me. He will try to cause FEAR. He will deceive you with his lie's. He cannot harm you if you are a Child of God. All he can do is lie to you and try to cause you to fear. Just like this ole snake. Now something else I learned about this type of snake is that if it can not deceive you and cause fear, it will roll over exposing it's belly and opening it's mouth as if to say I am dead, I am no longer a threat to you. That is exactly what the devil does to Christians that stand up to him and rebuke him in the name of Jesus. He will flee or roll over and play dead. And given the first opportunity he will leave your presence (The presence of the holy spirit that lives within you). You have real power, don't be afraid to use it. II Timothy 1:7 says: For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Christian friend, You have NOTHING to FEAR!!! |

By Mike Holmes (49) Ministry is not just something we do in church. It's a way of life. The next 2 weeks we are honored to horse sit for some dear friends in Florida. During which time we do the daily chores including stall cleaning. This morning as I was sifting the sawdust and talking to the Lord; He shared this. Cleaning stalls is like our lives; God has to sift the junk out of our lives and leave behind the good to be used over and over. Have you got something in your stall that is smelling things up; Let God remove them. One day you will look back and laugh at what you tried to hold on to. LOL (SURRENDER IT ALL). It really isn't worth holding on to. |
Are you in the middle of a low spot?

By Mike Holmes (48) Each stall has a low area. All the fluid runs to that area. Each day that area needs to be removed and replaced with new bedding. If not that area continues to grow in size and the odor; before long your entire barn reeks with a this odor. Sin starts this way too. At first it's just something small and if not dealt with and wash by the blood of the lamb more sins come and each time it gets easier, before you know it you are burdened down by the heavy load of sin. You are in the middle of that low spot in the stall. Get up and get out of there; get yourself washed in the blood of the lamb. It is this simple call upon the name of our Lord Jesus and ask him to remove this sin and take the lead role in your life. Remove that sin and replace it with prayer and His word (The Bible). |

We have tried tying ropes around the bucket and still she fights until she waste more water than she drinks. Spilling water all over the stall really helps with the overall aroma too. LOL.... Sometimes we are happy just splashing around in the water (GOD'S WORD) But soon we find ourselves thirsty again. Horses and people need a certain amount of water daily. Christians need a certain amount of water (GOD'S WORD) too. I am afraid all too often we are pleased with just splashing around in the "water". If we want to get to the roots we must take in enough water to travel deep into the depths. It will take strong roots to survive the storms that WILL come. Don't waste the "water", one day it won't be easy to get! |

By Mike Holmes (45) The average horse will intake 5 to 10 gallons of fresh water per day. Just like humans, different horses crave or need different water amount intakes. A horse deprived of feed, but supplied drinking water, is capable of surviving 20 to 25 days. A horse deprived of water may only live up to 3 or 6 days. John 4:14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Many horse farms have installed automatic watering systems; While that will make it easier on the barn help (ME), I prefer the 5 gal buckets that have to be cleaned every day. You see there is nothing like good old cold fresh water. You won't get that with the automatic watering systems because the bucket needs to be cleaned daily. THE VESSEL NEEDS CLEANED DAILY!!! Also I cannot tell how much water intake my horses have with the auto system. If one of the horses is not drinking enough water I catch it quick, before a real problem occurs. Here is a little something I found very interesting. If a horse goes off their water, add a second bucket to their stall with "SALT WATER" they will drink it first which makes them thirsty. When they get thirsty they turn to the freshwater!!! Is anybody shouting yet? Be ye the SALT !!! Make your circle of friends thirsty for God. |

By Mike Holmes (44) As I was talking with the Lord today he knew my heart was saddened from the news of Femmie Starks passing this morning at 2:16. She is the wife of pastor Andy Starks in New Iberia, LA. Seemingly the Lord said why are you so sad? I gave you a clear example of what this life is really all about! Folks have even made videos to remind you. You see as believers this is not our home, we are truly just passing through and toward the end just like this caterpillar we struggle to be free of this earthly body; Oh but... when we are free, we take on a beautiful new heavenly body. Cobwebs in my horse barn

By Mike Holmes (43) Why are there cobwebs in my horse barn? Every horse barn I have been in has the same issue and it has to be dealt with regularly so things don't get out of hand. Spiders set their traps where they are most likely to catch food (FLIES) flies are attracted to smell, odor (Horse Apples) etc. There are many methods of removing these cobwebs; But the lesson here today is removing them regularly. In 1st Corinthians Paul said "I die daily". The spiders and flies are persistent, remove them today and tomorrow they will do their best to move right back in. Sin is like that! We must rebuke sin daily from our lives, cover it with the blood of Jesus. The Bible says "Think on these things". Godly things. The old saying GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is so true. If we are to live a victorious life we must cleanout yesterday's cobwebs and move forward. Take a spiritual shower daily - You'll smell much better! |

By Mike Holmes (42) We clean these horse stalls everyday, everyday! Someone said why, they are just going to mess it up again. Yes, but we love those crazy horses, they are dependent upon us to provide their every need. Ain't it nice to start fresh everyday. You don't have to step in the same ole "Horse Apples" that you left behind yesterday. You prayed about them and ask God to take away all that which is not good, when you ask forgiveness it's like starting off with a fresh new stall, fresh bedding and all. One other thing; we sprayed the stalls with fly spray to help keep those pest away for a while,(Prayers) oh but they'll be back. But so will the Master; Cleaning, caring and providing daily. Wake up praising Him for the freshness in the air.....It's a brand new day!!! |

As soon as these words left my mouth He whispered "Be joyful in ALL things, ALL day, Everyday" . . . . REJOICE & BE GLAD. You mean to tell me that one can go from being the president of a well know horse publication, owner of an successful equestrian center, hiring others to clean your horse stalls while you are at the world competitions....now cleaning someone else's horse stalls to help raise the funds to take the gospel across the country? You want me to be happy? YES, YES, YES!!! Amazingly we are happy; Happier than we have ever been just knowing that we are doing what God has called us to do. Winning the lost to Christ, encouraging our brothers & just being SALT. One day at a time sweet Jesus! Praise Him today! By Mike Holmes (40) So we shall see who gets the last laugh! Ok, for some unknown reason every stall in the horse barn was twice as messy today. This caused twice the normal amount of work and it just felt like the horse's were laughing about it. Ever have those days? One step forward and 2 steps back! Why were there roadblocks everywhere we turned today? Exodus 23:20 “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” .... When we are faced with roadblocks we need to remember that God has ordered angels to go before us. Sometimes to block us from getting in the car because He knows what lies ahead of us. What is He protecting me from today or what is the reason I am supposed to stay on the farm today. Sometimes we see why and sometimes we don't, it's called FAITH, TRUST HIM. God is like the wind; you can't see it but sometimes you see and feel the results of the wind. Hope you have a blessed day. |

By Mikes Holmes (39) As I entered the barn this morning, I ask the Lord what He had for us today. The word was "APPEARANCE". How important is appearance? Ask that young person who is getting close to the dating age. Ask the car lot manager. The store owner. The horse barn manager. When we operated our sales/training horse farm we did certain things to make sure you felt invited and welcomed. The lawns were mowed, fences were maintained, cigarette butts, soda cans, etc. were put in the trash. Stalls and horses were cleaned and horses were ridden often; Their registration and health papers were in order. OK LORD; What does this have to do with being a Christian? Everything... You want to be prepare to help others find salvation, to be a great example. Are you prepared? Is the word fresh in your mind? When was the last time you talked with the Father? Better yet LISTENED to Him. Are your surroundings invited to others? Do you wear a smile? OUCH, there is something I have to work at. At times people look at me when my mind is on something else and they see a frown (I may be in deep thought) But they perceive me as an unhappy person. Unapproachable! Several years ago I wore starched shirts everyday. I wanted to present myself the best I could; however after many years I found out that I had become unapproachable. People perceived me as someone who thought they were on a higher level. When the Lord whispered in my ear "Relax" make yourself approachable if you want to be effective. WOW. What an eye opener that was to me. Often I am seen in a t-shirt (Clean) not because that is my favorite type of clothing but because I want to be approachable, I want to be available, I want to be effective for Christ. I want my friends and loved ones to look past my wardrobe and see the sincere love that Christ has put in my heart for them. I want them to experience the God that I have come to know and love. I want them to escape hell and spend eternity in Heaven too. HOW IS YOUR APPEARANCE ? ARE YOU APPROACHABLE ? LET'S B-Salt ! |

By Mike Holmes (38) The barn is full of horses and not one is the same color or has the same markings. Not one has the same personality. None are the exact same height or weight. One is crippled in his feet. One has a nervous habit with her tongue. One has a sour attitude. One just goes with the flow and one has that "Hey look at me" issue. BUT... they all have 4 legs, 2 eyes, 2 ears. Then I heard the Father say "They are the herd". Imperfections and all. They are NOT the barn, they are the herd. We are not the church building or barn; We are a group of humans who share the common interest in God. Not perfect. different colors, some tall, some short, some rich, some poor, etc. We should watch horses in the wild. There is a pecking order, there are leaders, there are young and old and by in large they all get along. We could learn a thing or two from just watching horses in the field. The young adults protect the elderly and the young. Mom's look out for the babies. Dad's protect their herd to his last breath. Much of what they do is 'BECAUSE IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO". The young learn from the old and they come to understand that it's always best to do the right thing. The long and short of being a real Christian is accepting Jesus into your heart and then just try to do the right things. It's not rocket science. By Mike Holmes (37) I have to admit these past 15 days of working at the farm, cleaning stalls and taking care of our friends horses while they were away has been a special time for me and the Lord. This morning as I entered the barn I said Father what have you got for us today? Anxious to hear from Him. but there was silence. After about half of the chores were done, I said Lord where are you I haven't heard from you yet this morning....... WOW. What I heard next about sent me to my knees! ....He said "How does it feel"? .......You know I am God and I created you in my image and that means I HAVE FEELINGS TOO. Tell my children that I am anxiously waiting to hear from them ! We often hear about us waiting for God, waiting for his timing and his answer to prayer, but a careful reading of the Bible will tell us a different story. In Isaiah 30 God has been waiting. God continuously waited on the children of Israel to do the right thing, to call out to God, over & over, HE WAITED. So as we get ready to wrap up our stay at this farm God speaks loud and clear to tell my people........I AM WAITING, WAITING TO HEAR FROM THEM. |

By Mike Holmes (36) Some will call you crazy. Some may think your foolish. But you and your horse are a team, together you can accomplish things that will amaze many. To achieve greatness at the world competitions you must have 100% trust in your horse and he in you. Psalm 91 tells us in verse 14 what the requirements are in order for us to receive His promise in verse 15. 1). Love Him = 2). He WILL answer. It doesn't get much simpler that. Can you imagine going into a trail class at the World competition not trusting your horse? Absolutely not. You have worked long hard hours, days, weeks, months and years getting to know your horse before you attempt this level of competition. In the process of spending that much time getting to know your horse. . . YOU FELL IN LOVE with him. Have you fallen in LOVE with Jesus? Remember 1 = 2. |

By Mike Holmes (35) Don't feed the barn cat! This message is a picture of a major problem in our nation. We had several barn cats at our horse farm and zero mice/rats; until my sweet mother in law decided she had to feed those poor cats. (Yes she had a big heart). Sometimes thinking with our hearts is not the correct thing to do. That's why God created us with both a brain and a heart, they have different functions. No matter how much I said "Don't feed the cats" they got fed anyhow. Soon we had mice everywhere. I agree we must help those who are truly in need, however you and I know there are thousands who are capable of working for a living but have chosen to sit back and have dinner served to them by our government. This is at our expense. It has caused a shortness in willing workers and a decline in our overall attitude. If I could sit down with our leaders and have one min to state my concern, I would simply say "DON'T FEED THE BARN CATS". 1 Timothy 5:8 (NIV) Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. Want to fix our country; Turn back to God & His word. |

By Mike Holmes (34) Sometimes all we need is a little paint and all is well. Sometimes we need a few bad boards replaced and sometimes we just need a complete overhaul. When the Lord started dealing with me about this message, I was reminded of my own life; How I had grown cold and even questioned if there really was a God. Yes I was raised in church and taught to pray and read the Bible, I had followed that life style into my late 20's until a divorce rocked my world. It was then that I stopped reading God's word and praying. I took matters into my own hands and God allowed me to do that. Life still had it's ups and downs, trails and test; Victories and losses. But something was missing! As I stood at my father's casket in 2005 I experienced a spiritual blood transfusion that changed the course of my life. Material things decreased in importance and spiritual things increased. That pattern continues today. Matthew 6:33 KJV But seek ye FIRST the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. The key word being FIRST and I had put everything but God first. But in His mercy and by His grace He held out His hand again that day. The second part of this short message is this: Why do some barns fall at the least little storm? It's because they were built on a poor foundation. I was raised in church, reading God's word and praying daily. I was given a great foundation thanks to my parents. Even though this old barn needed much work it had a good foundation and was able to be rebuilt. HOW'S YOUR FOUNDATION? DOES YOUR BARN NEED A LITTLE PAINT? God loves you and wants to do a remodel. Invite Him and you will be amazed too! |

By Mike Holmes (33) Back on the farm there is one thing you can always count on... Mending Fences! It does not matter how large or small your farm, if you have animals there are always repairs that must be done to keep your animals in and close to you...so you can "Protect them". Each of us has a circle of friends and family that we hold dear to our hearts and we want to help protect them because we love them. Sometimes we over step our boundaries by voicing our options on matters that really do not concern us and it may be viewed as trying to CONTROL their lives. This is just one of many ways that people get their feelings hurt and can cause a breech in the fence of friendship. I have known of family members going years without speaking to each other; when ask why they have trouble recalling. This is one of the most effective tools of the enemy, divide and conquer! It may start off simple but then other friends and family get involved and before you know it you have a split in the family. This sadly happens all to often in our church families too. Today I want to encourage everyone to go the second mile, 3rd & 4th. Make an effort today to mend a broken fence with someone; LIFE IS SHORT. You will feel better having taken the first step. The Bible teaches if we are to be forgiven, we must forgive. GO ON, DO IT MEND A BROKEN FENCE TODAY. |

There's just something about the country and wide open skies that brings you back to what really matters. Family, Good friends and faith in God. So next time you get all tensed up from work and life in the city, just take a trip to the country. I really think with all the noise of the city, cars, horns, brakes and squealing tires it's too hard to hear God speak. If you can't get out to the country I guess a closet will have to do. GET ALONE WITH GOD. You'll be glad you did. Remember He made us with 1 mouth and 2 ears! LISTEN twice as much as you talk. BTW... He normally whispers! |

By Mike Holmes (31) In this picture we have 2 donkeys, one says pet me please while the other one says go on put your hand up here and you'll be missing a couple fingers. Raised in the same country, feed the same food, cared for by the same person. So why the difference? It's not a vitamin deficiency, it's not the caretaker, it's not the economy or the country, it's not even the surroundings. It's a heart condition. Jesus maintained a perfect attitude in every situation. He prayed about everything and worried about nothing. We, too, should seek God’s guidance about every aspect of our lives and allow Him to work out His perfect will. Jesus’ attitude was never to become defensive or discouraged. His goal was to please the Father rather than to achieve His own agenda (John 6:38) For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. By Mike Holmes (30) Like a horse that's being saddled for the first time, we often buck, run, jump, etc. when trials come our way. If the horse could just trust the trainer from the very first moment they would be better off, but they are fearful of the unknown. When we invite Christ into our hearts, we too are fearful because we don't understand. Like a good horse he/she learns to trust the trainer in all matters with time and experience. As a new Christian we start off with a measure of faith and as we grow in knowledge and experience our level of faith grows too. Oh there are always new boogie men that jump up at us but our reaction to them becomes less and less because of faith in the trainer/leader/savior. Philippians 4:6-7 (NKJV) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; (7) and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. |

By Mike Holmes (29) Why does the farmer go out into the dark waiting for the sun to rise. FAITH.. Why does he continue year in and year out the plant crops? FAITH.. He has come to know that if he plants seed there will be a harvest. FAITH. We know the sun will set at an approximate time tonight. FAITH. Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Anyone can believe after they have seen the sun rise; But it takes FAITH to believe the sun will rise before it has risen. You are probably thinking it doesn't take a lot of FAITH for these things. You are exactly right. God knew when He created us that we were weak in FAITH. Therefore He made the plan of salvation so simple. He said believe in your heart and confess with you mouth that Jesus is the Christ, the son of God and you shall be saved. Romans 10:9 SIMPLE FAITH. As we exercise our FAITH it begins to grow. We stop worrying as much. We can even come to an understanding that when we have done our best ... He WILL do the rest. Exercise your FAITH. It's like a muscle the more you exercise it the more it grows. FAITH. |

Is it worth all the sweat, muck, splinters, cuts and bruises from working on the farm. The work is hard, the days are long, you aren't in the spotlight and you certainly won't gain fame and fortune. But there is a great reward at the end of the day that most folks just don't understand. Our Christian walk through life is like that too; many find it hard to understand why we have no interest in the things they find happiness in. To me becoming a Christian was like moving from the big city to the farm . . . a breath of fresh air. Yes it's a total lifestyle change. If you find yourself searching for a deeper happiness, you've tried many things and still something is missing; take a drive to the country or find a quiet space and talk to God. He is there waiting to hear from you; Yes You ! If you don't know how to pray just simply talk to Him. He will listen. Look around in silence because He will find a way to communicate with you that YOU will understand and accept as a message from Him. Father God I ask you to speak to many through this message today; touch hearts and change lives in Jesus name.Amen. At the end of the day...You'll be glad you did. The rewards are great. One of the most valuable lessons one will learn on the horse farm is to "Imprint" those babies. We have raised more baby horses than most folks have ever seen. The best piece of advice I have to offer someone with a new colt or filly is to IMPRINT them. Get your hands on them while they are still wet from birth if possible. By doing so your touch and smell becomes comfortable to them. They accept you as part of the family (Parent). Teaching begins the moment you first touch them. Ashamed to admit it but one year we were so busy with the number of babies and business that one filly slipped through the imprinting process. Tomorrow never came around until she was about 6 months old. She became indignant and trust no one. She would hurt you and herself trying to escape from the very thing that would make her life better. How often do we do this injustice to our own children. The Bible says Proverbs 22:6 (KJV) Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. We wonder what has happen to this generation? They weren't IMPRINTED in the things of God ! Are they hopeless? NO. But I will tell you this ... Our job is much tougher than it should have been. LET'S TEACH THIS GENERATION TO IMPRINT THEIR CHILDREN. Pray that they learn from our mistakes! GOD BLESS AMERICA AGAIN. |
An Idle Mind Is the Devil’s Playground.

Corral panels are a good thing; they have made our lives so much easier on the farm. Construct a round pen for horse training, build a cattle chute or even a box for the vet. But what happens when you take that extra panel and lean it up against the barn when not in use? Well those of you that have horses know that if there is a way for a horse to get itself in trouble they are sure to find it. LOL. One such event happened when a nosey horse decided there was a few blades of grass that just looked greener on the other side of that single panel leaning against the barn. Turned her head sideways to fit it through, then something spooked her. Thank God she was confined to a 1 acre turnout. Lord only knows what would have happened if she were in open country; we might still be looking for her. My lord, I never realized a horse could carry a 10 ft panel while running and bucking. LOL. Philippians 4:8 explains An Idle Mind Is the Devil’s Playground. Sometimes curiosity gets us into trouble, while it's good exercise to let your mind wonder we must keep it channeled in the right direction. The enemy will jump at any opportunity to cause us to distance ourselves from God. Don't fall into those traps; That blade of green grass on the other side of the fence is NOT worth it. The devil is striving to kill and destroy your home, your marriage, your relationships, your business and mostly distance you from God. Philippians 4:8 tells us what we are to focus on. Let us practice these things. Have another blessed day! Body language! YES horses do have a language all their own and we can learn what they are saying to us. Why is that so hard to understand when most of us know dogs have a language. Can you understand what your dog is saying to you? I'm hungry, I need to go out, I need to go out NOW ! Company is here. Pictured here is a horse that is resisting the trainer. He is looking outside the pen, his back is arched with the rear toward the trainer, his ears are laid back. All signs telling the trainer I am not accepting you as the leader. But as time goes on, this horse will come to understand that it's better to follow than to lead. You see, when he starts to follow, life gets a lot easier on him. God also has a language just like that dog or horse. In order to come to understand Him, you must spend time with Him. You would never have known what your dog or horse was trying to tell you had you not spent a lot of time with them. Want to communicate with God? SPEND TIME WITH HIM. |

So your horse got lose and had a bright idea to go play in the mud. Bad timing because you had just spent hours bathing her, braiding her mane, polishing her hooves for today's show. Yeah, very upsetting after having driven 100 miles to get to the show. Perhaps it was or was not your fault that she got lose. That really doesn't matter. What's done is done! The question is what do you do now? You could just throw her out into the pasture and say I am through with you. You don't deserve the comfort of my barn, nor my fellowship. Just go spend the rest of your days out there fending for yourself. See how you like that! Well, of course you wouldn't do that. Yet how many times do we see our Christian family do that to one another? One slips and steps in the mud (Does something not so Christ like) and the church wants to point fingers and cast them out of their fellowship. It's not limited to any one denomination. It's across the board. Why not help clean the mud off and give a helping, encouraging hand. Why not put em back in the show ring. STOP ENCOURAGING THEM TO GO BACK AND PLAY IN THE MUD. |

There are many different disciplines in the horse world. Many different colors, heights, weights and age groups. But they all have some common interests. They all enjoy fellowship, food and play. They all desire comfort and rest. No matter what country you visit they all speak the very same language. In the human race there is one word the same in all languages; HALLELUJAH....meaning "God be praised". Psalm 150:6 (KJV) Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. Praise ye the Lord. So why is it so difficult for people to understand that God really exist? We feel the wind and believe (But we can't see it). We see the clouds and believe rain is on the way; Before we see or feel it. Look around day or night at God's creations and sing Hallelujah. BTW; watch the birth of a new born horse and see God at work. Hallelujah ! |

As a trainer there is nothing quite like the feeling when your horse says, OK I trust you to lead me! I surrender ! I love you, because you first loved me. I recognize your leadership and that you will keep me safe in what ever you ask of me. I WILL TRUST YOU. Some horses come to understand this early on, while others remain untrusting for years. I believe some horses have trouble believing the trainer, because they don't understand how they could possibly know things that they don't. Horses are flight animals (When faced with fear their natural instinct is to flee). Do you doubt God because you don't understand him? When ask to go forward, do you run the other way? The Bible says: Romans 10:17 (KJV) So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Do you try to trust Him but flee when faced with trouble? 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. When we invite Christ into our hearts, we surrender our lives to Him. We ask Him to take the leadership role. We still need to work on that Trust and Understanding thing. These 2 scriptures give direction to both. God loves a trusting student too! Saddle up, Let's ride! |

Every real cowboy knows he's gonna need a good pair of leather gloves. Tending barbed wire or repairing broken board fences can cause life long scars. So go prepared for the job at hand. How many times do we "saddle up" and take off without checking our equipment? We're faced with a job at hand, are we ready or do we go scrambling for those gloves? Where did I put them? Ephesians 6:13 (KJV) Wherefore take unto you the whole Armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Let's not be surprised by the task at hand, let's be prepared. Those gloves that we choose to put our hands in are useless sitting there on the table; But when we put our hands in them they can do amazing things. We are like a pair of work gloves when we allow God to use us...He can do amazing things! |

When training students how to get their horse to respond to their body pressure, I would often have them ride their horse in the direction their eyes were looking. In other words if they saw a clump of grass they could walk the horse to it, ask the horse to follow your eyes. If your eyes led you into a circle around that clump and another and back; before long you may find your doing figure 8's without even thinking about it. You see the student thinking so hard about where their eyes where looking, they forgot all about body pressure. The body automatically follows the eyes. Yes that includes your hands, legs and even your feet. Yup even your cheek muscles. Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. In short: If we keep our eyes on the task at hand there will be great reward. Don't worry about the rest of your body, Just keep your eyes on Jesus. Trust me your body will follow your eyes! (HEART). |

Looking back at the first time your 2 year old colt was saddled. Today he is 4 years old and look at him now! He has gained your trust. Why? Because you have spent time with him and over and over again he has proven that he can be trusted. The only way you can get that trust is by "Spending time with him". If I have trained him and spent time with him, but you have only seen him from afar or heard about him, you would NOT have the same level of trust that I have. He enjoys your company. Don't just watch God from a distance; He wants to spend time with you. Study His word and let Him speak to you. The more time you spend with him the greater your trust! |

PASS THE SALT PLEASE! 22 years ago a couple refused to take NO for an answer. You are the man we want to train our horse (2 year old colt). I had just decided not to take in any more outside horses for training. They were persistent and finally I accepted their horse. I also insisted they come and be part of the training process. One day, just as I laid the calf of my leg on the horse to ask him to go into a lope a cat jumped up on a post in the round pen. I can only imagine what went through that colts mind...He went to bucking as hard as he could. Several people were watching this "mini clinic" and yes I received a standing ovation for riding him, LOL. The colt made the best possible horse for this couple. I don't think he has bucked a single time since that day. 24 years later they still have that horse and he is in great shape. I had no idea he would unite a friendship that has lasted over 2 dozen years; A partnership that would take us to the World competition where we entered 3 classes and made the finials in all 3 events. Little did we know that God just wanted us to be "salt shakers". You see we now know that it was by divine design that this couple refused to take NO for an answer. God led them to us for a different reason all together. He knew there would be a time when they would need someone to sprinkle a little salt on their lives. No, we haven't opened the box and poured the entire contents of salt on their plate, we are available as God leads and says "PASS THE SALT". Our lives speak our faith. While our friendship is of most importance, the realization of why God placed us in their lives 2 dozen years ago is simply amazing. Not to mention the blessing they have been in our lives. You see God also knew that we would be in an evangelist music ministry which would take us on the road. Twice a year we help this couple by horse/dog sitting while they take a 2 week break. This also helps raise funds for our ministry road trips. Gods plan is always better. Colossians 4:6 NIV Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. So when He sets a table just pull up a seat and wait for someone to say...PASS THE SALT PLEASE ! |

A horses natural defense is to flee. It is NOT a natural thing for a horse to stand still when faced with a perceived threat. Only the horse with hours, months and years of training will trust the trainer enough to "Be Still". In order for the horse to have that level of trust he has spent Much Time with trainer asking him to just trust me. Several years ago we entered one of our 4 year old colts in the WORLD "Trail" competition (Yes, he made the finals). It was so exciting to watch the level of trust from this colt. He had traveled a 1,000 miles to be in a strange place, with hundreds of strange horses, step into an arena full of obstacles to cross, gates to open, bright lights and a lot of noise. Yet he put his trust in the trainer and completed the course with a standing ovation. Victory because of Trust ! When we face difficult decisions in life, like the horse our first natural thought is to flee. The Bible tells us to Trust in the Lord, To fear not and to Be Still. JAMES 1:6 But he must ask in faith, without doubting, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. THE ONLY WAY WE WILL HAVE THIS LEVEL OF TRUST IS TO SPEND TIME WITH THE TRAINER, TEACHER, LORD. |

It's not always as it appears to be! Spectators are thinking; Oh look, that horse is taking a bow after a great performance when in reality the trainer has offered the horse a snack. But he has to get into a position to receive it and that position is bowing. The horse has no clue why the crowd is applauding and could care less. The trainer has accomplished exactly what he set out to do! He created an illusion. The trainer has deceived the crowd. But it was necessary to make a good show! The devil will do his best to deceive you in every way. He'll offer you a snack to get you into positions and places that are difficult to get out of. Be aware of WHO is offering WHAT. 1 John 4:1 Says: Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. LISTEN TO THAT STILL QUITE VOICE "HE" will give you discernment ! Then follow HIS lead! |

That Annoying Cribbing Horse sound ! Most horse businesses have owned at least one horse that has become a CRIBBER. Cribbing can be caused by extreme boredom and is usually associated with horses who spend most of their time in stall situations. As the horse bites down on the wood and inhales, endorphins are released that can give the animal a “high”. That is why it can be very difficult for the horse that has started cribbing to stop – they get addicted to what it does to their body. It is my personal belief that bad horse habits can be contagious. Bad habits in horses or humans effect those around us. An old saying GIGO "Garbage In Garbage Out" says it all. Keeping our minds and bodies busy with things of God will keep us away from ungodly thoughts and deeds. Though this statement is not found verbatim in the Bible, “idle hands are the devil’s workshop” has its roots in Scripture. The apostle Paul notes that those who waste their time in idleness or in a non-productive manner are easily led into sin: (2 Thessalonians 3:11) and (1 Timothy 5:13). THINK ON THESE THINGS - Don't become addicted to evil. |

What are the benefits of a hayloft? While there are many benefits of a hayloft. One of the main reasons for a hayloft is to store the hay. To keep it from the weather elements. Several years ago I drove from Florida to Kentucky to buy a trailer load of alfalfa hay for our horses. $6 a bale vs $22 what a deal ! That is until the rainy season hit and the metal barn produced heat which caused the remaining bales of hay to mold. Mold and horses are a deadly mix. So we had to destroy 3 or 4 tons of hay. Oh my heart! But I knew better then to try to feed it to our horses. What is the world trying to feed us? Had that hay been properly sheltered it would not have been lost. Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge (Shelter) in him. It's when we run out from under the shelter of God that we expose ourselves to the evil elements of this world. Had I sheltered that hay in a well ventilated hayloft it would not have been harmed. While a few bales were saved most had to be burned. Matthew 7:14 (KJV) Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. BE SAFE - STAY IN THE SHELTER OF HIS ARMS. Know His promises. Know that you can stand on His word, His promises. |

Several years ago I received a call inviting me to join several others for a nice long trail ride. I had several horses that were in training at the time. I narrowed it down to one mare that was just doing everything right and needed to be introduced to the trails. It was getting late and she had never been loaded in a trailer, so I was rushing to teach her to load. I knew better! NEVER RUSH TRAINING. It got dark and I called off the loading education "LOL". Called my friend and said I am not going I need to teach a horse to load. He laughed at my frustration and said "You will go". After a 15 min cooling off period, I went back to the barn, walked the horse to the trailer on a loose lead, I relaxed, stepped into the trailer and "waited" within 2 minutes she walked right on in. I backed her in and out half dozen times and the next day I had to give her a score of 10 on a 1 to 10 scale. She was the perfect horse. BE READY ... BE PREPARED. There I was with a great horse that hadn't been taught to load. I could have easily missed out on one of the best trail rides ever. Simply because I was not prepared. DON'T MISS IT . . . BE PREPARED for the best ride of your life and the greatest reward ever! 2 Timothy 4: 2 & 3. Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. (We have sadly arrived). The Bible tells us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. It's between YOU & GOD. Be sure what you are hearing lines up with Gods word. BE PREPARED. Come on let's ride this trail together! |

You have trained and conditioned for the big race. You have run many races in times past. Some you did extremely well, others you were among the last to cross the finish line. There was a time in your life where you stumbled and fell. All eyes were on you! Is anything broken? Will he/she be able to race again? Back to the barn, ex-rays and a complete checkup is required. Perhaps you'll need to sit out for the rest of the season. Perhaps you will never enter the "race track" again. You are still a horse, you still have value. Yes I know you enjoyed the track, the race and the spotlight. LIFE IS NOT OVER just because you can't run anymore. Someone needs a great trail horse. Someone needs a good friend. Someone needs your knowledge and experience. Someone just needs a pasture buddy. II Timothy 4:7 says I have fought a good fight, I have finished [my] course, I have kept the faith: Don't be discouraged because your course has been changed. Each race is different but they all have a finish line. Run the best race you can with honesty, give it your ALL. Then get ready for the next race even if it's a totally different kind of track. Life is not about what you had or have; It's about what you do with what you have! RUN IT WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT. |

Horse trainers know that training never ends. There is always more to teach and learn. They also know that just because a horse “gets it wrong” you don’t give up on him/her. You keep explaining it and given them time to figure it out. All horses learn at different speeds. It is awesome when a horse gets it right at every new lesson, but that doesn’t happen often. I had to pause for a moment to reflect on a few fast learners. (Smile on my face). But let’s focus on the ones who get it wrong a lot before they “get it right”. I kinda fit that group. Life’s lessons have been tough. The harder the lesson the better I remembered it. Much to be said about hard lessons, but for now let’s stay focused. The point I want to get across is that regardless how many times we get it wrong our Heavenly father gives us another opportunity to “get it right”. He will come at us from another direction with hopes that we will better understand the lesson. As a horse trainer I had to learn the art of forgiveness. Patience is a requirement of a good horse trainer. Our heavenly father is the master trainer. He never gives up on you. He is forgiveness! Come close and listen, He will cause you no harm! Luke 23:24 Jesus said Father forgive them for they know not what they do. . |

Let's get something clear up front "I don't like snakes". I don't want them in my barn. My horses don't like snakes and they don't want them in the barn. My dog "Shadow" would run interference and kill a snake before you could blink your eyes. But the truth is a rat snake in the hay loft ain't all bad. They help keep the mice and rats at bay. How often do we fear things that really won't hurt us. We are creatures of habit and don't welcome change. Sometimes when God calls us to a new assignment it includes a total change. Finances, Location, Friends, Home, Transportation, Wardrobe, etc. We can fight it all we want but the truth is it's like arm wrestling a 700 pound gorilla and guess who is going to win. Having gone through some of these assignment changes we have learned that change does not kill you and it's not half as bad as we thought. So before you kill that rat snake consider its benefits. Not all snakes are poisonous. They all cause fear. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (FEAR NOT). If God is calling you to a new assignment He will lead you through any storms along the way. Don't let go of His hand, stay close and He will guide you through them. |

Today's brief is attributed in part to Lynn Baber's book Discipleship with horses. Often horse owners want to lure (train) their horses with treats. I am not totally against that. I believe at a very young age there might be occasions to use them. But there are MANY dangers if we continue using treats (Gifts) to get the end results desired. Someone asked, "What has happened to our country?" The above is a perfect picture of what is wrong with America. With the greatest intentions we started gifting those in need. As the news spread through the herd more and more came to the meeting place to receive their gifts. One day the gift giver showed up late and the entire herd was angry. Pawing at the fence, ripping feed buckets off the walls, kicking and destroying everything in sight. What was a gift turned into an "ENTITLEMENT". Many people today have fallen into that mindset. It was never meant to become an entitlement...it was intended as a gift to help you through a tough time. John 3:16 says it best, "For God so loved the world that He "GAVE" His only son. You see Salvation is a GIFT. We are NOT entitled to it... It is a gift! |

My Dog Shadow: I have been blessed with several dogs throughout my lifetime that have become best friends. And then there was SHADOW ! One morning as I was sitting on the bunkhouse steps looking out toward the horse arena I noticed an Austrian Shepard (2 years old) standing at the corner of the barn looking at me as if to say are you going to love me or turn me away (Reject me)? I called for him to come closer and once I accepted him with a few pats on the head he became my Shadow. We were getting ready for a monthly horse auction held on our farm that day. Everywhere I went this dog was at my side. He would not leave me. Several people noticed and asked, "how long have you had him"? Thinking the answer would be years not hours. He was focused on me. The owners who lived about 1/4 mile behind us came to get him after about 3 days. Over the course of the next 10 days this dog ran away from them several times to be with me. Finally I made an offer to buy him and they accepted. He was focused on me. ARE WE FOCUSED ON THE MASTER? Jesus help me to keep my eyes on you. Everywhere I went this dog now named Shadow was there. Yes, he was welcome at church too. We had monthly singing's at The Farm and Shadow was on stage or nearby every second. Hundreds gathered for these events yet rarely did Shadow loose sight of where I was. Oh, to be that focused on Jesus, our leader, our Savior. Shadow loved food, water, snacks but nothing would lure his attention away from me. He had to be in my presence at all times. For the next 10 years he accompanied me on stage, to church, on the road, slept beside my bed. Yes, he became the best family dog ever...but there was something special about our relationship. He knew I was devoted to him, I would protect him, I would bless him and I would love him. HE WAS NEVER FOCUSED ON THE GIFTS...But the giver! Today I am afraid too many Christians are focused on the gifts and not the giver. The true gift is the giver! Shadow had jobs to do around the farm and he did them all with excellence but his main job was to be attentive to his master. He would sit at the stall doors waiting and watching as I cleaned stalls, groomed horses, doctored horses, etc. He was ever watching with an attitude of what can I do to help? Never getting in the way but always available to respond to my command. LORD, TODAY MY PRAYER IS THAT I BE LIKE SHADOW. Thank you Father God for teaching me so much through this 4 legged angel. Help me to stay focused on you the GIVER and not the gifts. |

"Everything that glitters is not Gold" I suppose everyone who buys a farm wonders about the history of that piece of land. Were there Indians and cowboys, did it play a roll in any of the wars fought on U.S. soil, did cover wagons cross the land, was gold treasures buried somewhere just out of sight. Yes, I have done my fair share of digging up bones, cans, horse shoes and everything but diamonds and gold. One time I thought If I dig any deeper I may need a tractor to get my tractor out of this hole, LOL Looking back I am amazed how we put such value on gold, silver, shiny things and so little value in God. For years I hardly gave Him the time of day, yet He blessed us over and over again until the smell of haughtiness and the lack of gratitude toward Him became overwhelming. Sometimes God will leave us to ourselves until we come to our senses or self destruction. I admit I have been guilty of taking credit for things God provided. I believed that "I" made certain accomplishments that I now realize it was ALL Him. In spite of me, He loved me and has and continues to provide in the most unexpected ways as we draw closer and closer to Him. May of 2005 as I stood at my fathers casket (dad was a minister) I received a spiritual blood transfusion that altered my life's course. Money, gold, silver, STUFF... became much less valuable and it's a good thing because I now know that God was preparing us for that which was to come with the crash of 2008. We, like so many others lost everything including our retirement, business and home. BUT GOD prepared a place for us 18 years ago and that was just the start. He is a jealous God. You will not get by with putting Him in the background. Don't take Him for granted. Make Him your "gold" and you too will be amazed! As I stood at my fathers casket his bible lay on the corner and a feeling came over me that I can only explain this way; I would have fought an army I had to have that Bible. Soon I was directed to Job the 22nd chapter. It spoke loud and clear to me, I repented and things began to change. Things that once were so important started taking a back seat to my growing relationship with God. I hope that you will take time to read Job the 22nd chapter and let it speak to your heart. I wouldn't trade the gold I now have for all the gold this world has to offer. ALL GOLD IS NOT THE SAME. Job 22: 23-25, If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored: If you remove wickedness far from your tent and assign your nuggets to the dust, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in the ravines, then the Almighty will be your GOLD, the choicest silver for you. |

LORD You gave me a mountain to climb. Do you ever feel like you have more on your plate then you can handle. Is the river too wide to cross? Are the valleys too deep and the mountains too high? As a retired horse trainer I still enjoy reading a good book on horse training and reliving some special experiences. Especially when the book equates to life with or without direction from our heavenly Father. In Lynn Baber’s book “Discipleship with horses” she talks about “Tire Mountain”, a series of different size tires placed around a dirt trail leading to the top of the hill. A obstacle course difficult to master without proper training. She explains a series of smaller obstacles leading up to tire mountain. A good trainer will never ask their horse to move on to the next obstacle until the current one has been mastered. A beautiful picture of LIFE. Take a moment to reflect on some of the training courses you have gone through in your life. As I reflect on some of my life obstacles I wonder how I could have ever crossed that mountain, river, valley or desert. Truth of the matter is “I” couldn’t have without divine guidance and assistance. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NKJV) No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. If you find obstacles getting larger and more difficult, just remember it’s because you have graduated to a higher level of training. But most importantly remember who holds the reins. A good trainer knows when to reassure, comfort and yes sometimes a little spur to the side is needed. Nothing wrong with that when it’s done in love for correction. One final thought: It’s always easier to hear the trainer’s voice when you’re in the right pasture! |

While on our 2 month ministry road trip, today we had the pleasure of visiting Cowboy-Up ministry about 10 miles from where our horse farm used to be. We enjoyed another great service with Skipper Calder & Kathy Calder. Got to see several old friends/family in Christ. Tonight I felt the Lord nudge me and remind me of something Kathy said today; "Mike & Denise Holmes were a big part of this ministry by allowing us to start this work there at their horse farm"... I recall a message that the Lord gave me the morning of my fathers funeral as I stood on the back porch overlooking the lake. It was early morning and the waters were still when a small john boat parted the waters causing a ripple that washed to both sides of the lake. As I stood there I heard that whisper "The ripple left behind is more important than the boat passing through the water". You see everyone of us leave behind a ripple effect that will influence the lives of every person in our circle of friends/relatives. Will that ripple be positive or negative? As we set at the table having breakfast this morning we laughed at our two border collies laying just across (ON) the imaginary line. You see, they know they are not allowed in the kitchen or dinning room while we are preparing food or eating. We didn't need to draw a line, they simply know that is NOT acceptable. How many times do we feel like we need to push the laws of God? We lay/stand right on the line daring Him to scold us until we get back where we are supposed to be. The Bible says: Revelation 3:16 (KJV) So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of My mouth. If you think "It's OK" because I'm not over the line, I'm sitting on the fence!!! Guess who owns that fence! I am reminded of a song the Lord gave Denise Holmes one morning; the main line of the song is "You KNOW about the line I drew in the sand...We KNOW about that line! Joshua 24:15 (KJV) And if it seems evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Sign's of the times! Horse's can tell by the placement of the sun, shadows and sky when it's getting close to supper time. Sometimes they will ignore these signs hoping they will hear the call of the master, owner, handler, caretaker, or person attending, etc. John 21:16 Jesus told Peter "Feed my sheep". In fact Jesus told Peter 3 times back to back "Feed my sheep". HOW MANY TIMES MUST WE BE TOLD? A few days ago I was praying for our community when I said Father God convict em, compel em to come into a relationship with you. It was that word "COMPEL" where He stopped me and said..."That's Your Job". Luke:14:23 And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. The sign's of the times are truly everywhere. Christian's, we all have been given a circle of friends. Some have small circles and some large. No matter the size of your circle, "COMPEL" em to come in. Jesus IS coming soon. The sign's are everywhere! If they are truly your friends don't let them slip into hell without you compelling them to come into a relationship with Christ. Making Him the Lord of their lives. Make a list of your circle of friends and make a point to share Christ with them. Jesus said to Peter "Do you love me"? COMPEL EM |

You've worked your fingers to the bones all Spring and Summer building a nice safe, warm barn for a few new rescue horses. You are going to make their lives so much better. Winter comes and you have left the stall doors open so they can come in out of bad weather yet go out anytime they so desire. The ice has frozen 10 inches thick on the pond and icicles hang from the horses manes. Try as you might they seem to want to stay outside in the storms of Winter. You bring out the feed and water, they eat and drink but refuse to be caught and led into the warmth. They refuse the shelter of the barn. Frustrated you say how can I make them understand I just want to help them. I want them to come in where it is warm and comfortable. You have even prepared soft warm bedding for them. HOW CAN YOU MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND. If only I could....Perhaps if I were able to become a horse they would understand what I am trying to tell them. God became man (Jesus) in an effort to communicate His love for you! He paid the highest price ever so you might understand how much He loves you and wants all the best for you. Are you resisting Him? Are you going through the storms of life with icicles hanging on and weighing you down? THERE'S A BETTER WAY. YOU'VE TRIED EVERYTHING ELSE, WHY NOT TRY JESUS. Read John 3:16 and from your heart pray, ask Him to be the Lord of your life. To take the lead. HE WILL |
